The first 25 years are the hardest
For my first 18 years in marketing, I told people I helped clients tell their story in the right way to the right people to sell their goods or services.
I helped one-man professional services firms develop and tell the story of why someone should do business with them. I helped a worldwide manufacturer of communications software maintain an 80% market share by telling their story to several different market segments in terms that meant something to each segment. I even helped a bank train their customers to tell the story of a brand new little service called direct deposit of payroll; a strategy that took them to being the second largest provider of that service in the nation.
And all of it fit nicely under that little description of what my clients and I considered most important. I helped them accomplish their business goals.
The
Internet changed business forever
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that a lot changed with the introduction
of the Internet. No matter what kind of business you operate, no matter what
size, just figuring out how to take advantage of the Internet has been a challenge
for most.
For me, the biggest change wasn't in how I helped clients accomplish their bottom line goal over the last 9 years. The advent of an electronic age made it a little easier to learn what I had to know to keep up-- for a little while. But the changes kept coming, and coming faster and faster.
For me, the big change was going from "I" to "we." I'm now "front man" for some of the most talented people from around the world in the areas of web design and development, graphic design, video production, search engine marketing and a host of other specialties that are becoming more vital to even a small business' online success.
Together, as Power Presenters, we’ve expanded our skills and understanding so much that we listened when it was suggested that we update that description of our services to reflect the interactive multimedia work we’re doing for clients today. Now we say:
We help clients mPower their communications. We help them deliver the right message through the right media to the right market to get results.
What do you think? Some days I like the precision of it, but most days, I just shake my head and roll my eyes. The more things change…..

P.S. I can also be found spouting off on video related topics and what I call "social marketing" in my Not Dot TV blog. Over at LizMicik.com you can also keep up on what I'm doing, where I'm speaking etc.
That's also where you'll find the results of some of the beta tests I do on products that may, or may not, make it to the Power Tools Store. From time to time I'll also try out a tactic or technique that provides some exceptional value, like laughter on an otherwise serious or tense day, or I may find something I don't have time to explore that might be just what you were looking for.
